Your web browser knows a lot about you. For example, it knows the type of operating system you are using and your location. Without asking you for permission, the websites you visit can access this information and use it to uniquely identify you.
There are two websites — Click and Webkay — that illustrate what data your web browser leaks to websites you visit.
Click uses a playful approach that includes both visual and audio comments. Besides showing you information such as how many CPU cores your computer has, the site watches and reports what you do on-screen. For instance, it relays when and where you move your cursor as well as how long you have been on the site.
Although not as entertaining, Webkay presents more detailed information, which is grouped into nine sections for easy reference. For instance, the "Software" section lists your operating system, the web browser you are using to access the site (including the version number), and the plugins installed for that browser. The "Connection" section lists your Internet service provider, download speed, and public and local IP addresses. You can even have Webkay scan your local network for information about the devices connected to it. By clicking the "Scan my Network" button, you are giving Webkay permission to perform the scan, but any website can run the scan without your consent.
